Melissa Newmark Palatine, IL Obituary: Palatine Mourns the Loss of Beloved Educator Melissa Newmark
Palatine, IL — The Palatine community is heartbroken following the sudden and tragic passing of Melissa Newmark, a devoted teacher and longtime resident, who died on May 6, 2025, in a train accident near her home. She was 42 years old.
Melissa, who resided at 896 W Kelly Ann Dr., was born in September 1983 and had lived in Palatine for many years. Her life was one of deep commitment to education, community, and family. For over 15 years, she taught at Lincoln Elementary School, where she was known for her passionate teaching style, creativity in the classroom, and profound connection with her students.
“Melissa had a unique ability to connect with every child,” said a colleague at Lincoln Elementary. “She saw their potential, even when they couldn’t see it themselves.”
In addition to her role as an educator, Melissa was deeply involved in community service. She regularly volunteered at local shelters, supported educational equity initiatives, and participated in outreach efforts that benefited countless individuals across Palatine. Her compassion and leadership extended well beyond the walls of her school.
Melissa is survived by her loving husband, Jonathan Newmark, and their two children, Emily and Jacob, who were the center of her world. She is also remembered fondly by her parents, Robert and Linda Thompson, and her siblings, Michael Thompson and Sarah Thompson.
A memorial service celebrating Melissa’s life will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Palatine Community Church, 123 Main Street, Palatine, IL. Friends, family, colleagues, students, and community members are invited to attend and honor her memory.
In place of flowers, the family has established the Melissa Newmark Memorial Scholarship Fund, which will support future educators from the Palatine area. Donations can be mailed to Lincoln Elementary School, 456 School Lane, Palatine, IL 60067.
Melissa Newmark will be remembered as a tireless advocate for children, a compassionate member of her community, and a beacon of light for all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy will live on through the lives she touched and the values she instilled.
